EARTH HOUR: A Global Petition

Main Issues
Climate change is one of most significant threat to the life on Earth. One way to slow down the acceleration of global warming is to encourage each individual to make changes in lifestyle. WWF invites the public to change our lifestyle with a simple and cheap way, which is: energy efficient.

Human dependence on electricity has increased from time to time. Meanwhile, the majority of power plants built in all countries fossil fuel (petroleum, coal, and natural gas) that in fact issued a CO2 or greenhouse gases and has been scientifically proven to lead directly to the dramatic increase in the average temperature of Earth. This is causing the rising of sea levels, climate change, and the potential for a large extinction on biodiversity. The impact of global warming is already assured to affect the environment as the place we live.

As a developing country that heavily dependent on natural resources and requires electricity to support the development, Indonesia should maintain its natural extraction so it does not contribute significantly to become one of the largest emitters in the world, and still be able to continue the effort to meet the needs of a growing population every year, including in terms of energy.

Solutions
It takes an activity that aims to encourage the public to participate in a small action that could bring a big difference.

What is EARTH HOUR?
EARTH HOUR is a WWF campaign, the largest conservation organization in the world, in the form of a global initiative to encourage individuals, community, business practitioners, and governments around the world to participate and turn off the lights and electronic equipments that are not used for 1 hour, at every Saturday in the 3rd week of March each year. This year, Earth Hour was held on March 26, 2011 at 20:30 to 21:30 (local time).

EARTH HOUR campaign originated from a collaboration among WWF-Australia, Fairfax Media and Leo Burnett for Sydney, Australia, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gases in the city as much as 5% in 2007. The success of this campaign is expected to be adopted by society, communities, businesses, and other governments around the world so that all citizens of the world can show that a simple individual action even if done in bulk will make our life on Earth for the better.

What is the influence of EARTH HOUR?
In 2008, 50 million people in 35 countries turn off the lights in action to support EARTH HOUR.
On March 28, 2009, hundreds of millions of people in over 4000 cities and towns in 88 countries around the world turn off the lights to support EARTH HOUR. EARTH HOUR 2009 and 2010 became the largest environmental movement in history.

What is the target EARTH HOUR 2011?
The main objective of this year's EARTH HOUR campaign is still the same as in previous years, namely to continue to target energy efficiency and changes in lifestyle in big cities in the world with high electricity consumption, and try to relate it to potential new energy sources cleaner and more renewable minimal impact on the environment.

In essence, this campaign reminds everyone that energy-efficient lifestyle is not enough with only participate in EARTH HOUR, but this small action should continue to be proven everyday in order to effectively reduce the greenhouse gases, and is followed by changing lifestyles to be more environmentally friendly, such as using public transport or cycling for travel, saving water, planting trees, and others.

In the long-term, hope that EARTH HOUR raise and provoke the spirit of leadership in all sectors to be adapted by governments and corporations in these countries is significantly participants to incorporate energy efficiency and use of new renewable energy sources as part of their policies in order to decrease greenhouse gases comprehensively.

So EARTH HOUR is not only stop within 1 hour, but is expected to be adapted by governments in the countries of the participants and the public who have committed to participating.

THIS EARTH HOUR, GO BEYOND THE HOUR
Turn off your lights for EARTH HOUR, then keep taking action to make a difference

After 1 Hour, Make Life Style!

Target :

  1. Reached more than 1 billion people worldwide in more than 5000 cities.
  2. Involving communities in more than 6000 towns and municipalities as well as working with many mass.
  3. Changing people's lifestyles become more environmentally friendly.
  4. Mandates of the total support collected to world leaders so that they can make meaningful change.

EARTH HOUR Indonesia - Jakarta

Why Jakarta?
Electrical energy consumption in Indonesia focused on Java - Bali or equal to 78% of the total national electricity consumption, because 68% of consumers are on the island of Java and Bali. Other parts of Indonesia have smaller portions.

Based on electricity consumption data in 2008, a total of 29,605 GWH or 23% of total electricity consumption of Indonesia, focused in DKI Jakarta and Tangerang.
Distributed to some sectors is divided into:

  • Households : 33%
  • Business / office and commercial buildings : 30%
  • Industry sector : 30% (mostly in the areas of Tangerang)
  • Government Buildings : 3%
  • Public facilities and social sectors : 4%

Total overall electricity consumption amounted to 29,605 GWH or equal to 26.4 million tons of CO2 (2004-2006 DJLPE Research on CO2 emissions from electricity production: 0.891 / MWh)

How big is the effect of Earth Hour to Jakarta?
By turning off lights and electronic equipment that is not used for 1 hour can contribute to saving electricity in Jakarta and to support energy efficiency programs initiated by the government on at 17:00 to 22:00.

If 10% ** of the city dwellers to participate in Earth Hour, then Jakarta can save electricity consumption amounted to 300MWh, which is equivalent to:

  1. Turning off a power plant and turn around 900 villages
  2. Reducing the 267.3 tons of CO2
  3. Absorption of more than 267 trees (one tree can absorb 1 ton of CO2 in 20 years of his life)
  4. O2 supplies to more than 534 people (1 tree is able to provide O2 for 2 people in 20 years of his life)
  5. If (300MWh = 1.080.000MJ) X Rp 200/MJ = save on electricity costs up to $ 216.6 million,-

** 10% of city dwellers, it is assumed 700 thousand people to turn off two lights per home.

EARTH HOUR is a strategic momentum for :

  1. Remind the public that climate change is also derived from the use of fossil fuel power plants.
  2. Promoting energy efficiency in cities with population and electricity consumption is wasteful.
  3. Creating and sparked public awareness about energy-efficient lifestyle in big cities in Java - Bali, a crisis of supply and distribution of electricity, and also potential sources of electricity in Indonesia to meet the needs of local communities, in a broader perspective can also provide stimulate changes in behavior and incentives for the economy.

Is there a policy to support Earth Hour Indonesia?

  • Law No.30 of 2007 on Energy
  • Presidential Instruction No. 5 of 2006 regarding energy efficiency policies
  • Presidential Instruction No. 2 of 2008 regarding energy efficiency and water
  • Governor Regulation no.70 of 2009 on energy conservation
  • Instructions Governor of Jakarta No. 73 of 2008 on the implementation of energy and water efficiency
  • Jakarta Governor Policy No.33 of 2008 on the criteria for utilization of energy in air-conditioned buildings
  • Other Government Regulations on Climate Change from the concerned ministries and the National Council on Climate Change

The Purpose of Earth Hour Campaign 2011

    1. To capture as many individuals, households, and businesses to participate turn off the lights as a symbol of their contribution to climate change
    2. To educate the public about the threats of global warming and what each individual can do to make a change in their daily activities to reduce their emissions

    4. To invite people to make behavioral change
