  What's Earth Hour?

EARTH HOUR is a global climate change initiative run by WWF, which calls on individuals, business sectors and governments around the world to turn off their lights for one hour to support the measures to cope with the climate change.

EARTH HOUR has started as a joint initiative between WWF-Australia, Fairfax Media and Leo Burnett for the city of Sydney, which goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Sydney by 5% in 2007. The campaign is aimed for the message to be adopted by individuals, business sectors and governments around the world, to show that individual action, which is conducted globally, can change our planet for the better. In 2008, the number of participants to this campaign increased into 50 million people in 35 countries.

EARTH HOUR 2010 aims to reach 1 billion people in 1,000 cities globally. The event is held not only to show the real connection between energy usage and climate change, but also to enable people to overcome the biggest threat our planet.

What does the EARTH HOUR 60+ logo imply?

Earth Hour Logo '60 +' show 60 minutes Earth Hour campaign where the focus is the impact that experienced by the earth and positive action in tackling the problem. The '+' indicates that the Earth Hour activities are not only stop until 60 minutes to turn off the lights, but also tied with lifestyle changes to become a more environmentally friendly.

Saturday, 26 March 2011, 8.30 – 9.30 pm (local time).

The objectives of Earth Hour Indonesia campaign?

  1. To reach public as much as possible (individuals, households and business sectors) to switch off their lights on March 26, 2011, at 20:30-21:30 (local time)
  2. To educate public on the impacts of climate change and potential changes to our habits in our daily lifestyle in order to reduce CO2 emission.
  3. Invite the public to make lifestyle changes become a lifestyle more environmentally friendly
  4. To gain support from corporations in the form of participation in spreading the Earth Hour campaign, both internally and externally; as well as their commitment in switching off their lights on the respective date and time.
  5. To give precedence for the continuity of Earth Hour campaign in 2010 and in the following years.
To measure the contribution of Earth Hour to the reduction of greenhouse gases emission in Indonesia after the campaign.
  6. To give mandate to the world leaders who will attend the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009 to make environment reformation, by producing new climate change policy to replace Kyoto Protocol.

Who are the targets of the Earth Hour Indonesia campaign?

1. Local administration of DKI Jakarta and the National Government to give support, both in spoken and written communications, as a representative and to set an example by including landmarks/monuments into this global campaign. It is also expected that both local administration and national government would  advise the related departments and institutions, including business sectors in Jakarta, to participate in the campaign.

2. Corporations

If commercial sectors (office buildings and shopping centers/malls) participate in switching off their light after working hours and combine this action with efficient and appropriate technologies, corporations can reduce tons of carbon dioxide emission, which is emitted significantly from lighting. Earth Hour is also aimed to show the corporations that it is actually easy and efficient to make changes by following the examples of other corporations which already succeeded in reducing their carbon dioxide emission.

3. Households

Every individual is asked to voluntarily give the commitment to turn off all of their unused lights and electronic appliances on the appointed date and time of the campaign. It will show that electricity consumption has a direct contribution to the global warming. Likewise, it goes to show that solidarity and collective action in small changes in lifestyle would lead to significant change.
